LATEST NEWS FROM NEPAL
Nepal has declared three days of mourning for the victims of Saturday’s earthquake in which more than 5,000 people are now known to have died and more than 10,000 people have been injured. Prime Minister Sushil Koirala says the government is doing all it can but is overwhelmed by the scale of the catastrophe. Rescuers are still struggling to bring aid to remote Himalayan areas. Heavy rain is worsening the plight of hundreds of thousands of people camped out in the open.
The UN estimates that eight million people in 39 districts have been affected by the 7.8-magnitude quake – more than a quarter of the population of Nepal.
Vast tent cities have sprung up in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, for those displaced, while strong aftershocks continue. Despite the very cold, wet weather, thousands are sleeping outside with little or no shelter, and conditions are sure to worsen as water and food become more scarce, combined with lack of sanitation, which will increase the chance for disease to begin and spread.
NEXT STEPS
The Nepalese Society of Texas, is sending a medical team to Nepal this week. NRN International President Shesh Ghale is also on the way to Nepal to establish an efficient distribution mechanism. The plan is to channelize/distribute collections via Red Cross and through Nepal’s Disaster Relief Fund and the Government of Nepal.
